at happy habitat, we are lovers and admirers of this beautiful earth and are conscious of the impact our business has on the environment. we are always taking steps towards being as sustainable as possible. while we make an effort, we realize this is a learning process, so we are always taking suggestions on how to improve in this area. if you have knowledge or suggestions, please let us know!
currently we are following these practices:
minimal paper use
we rarely use paper. orders at trade shows are taken electronically on an ipad. we do not send a paper invoice or receipt, it is sent electronically. in 7 years of business, we have never had anyone question this. that’s pretty cool. our business cards that are included in our packages and passed out at markets are made from 100% recycled cotton t-shirt offcuts.
our single packages are made from 100% recycled materials, can be recycled and are completely reusable. we searched long and hard for to find these. they may not have the ‘unboxing WOW!’ factor, but we hope you are conscious of our efforts when opening your package! when more than one throw is purchased, we use recycled cardboard boxes, which of course can also be reused and recycled.
carbon neutral shipping
our domestic shipments are sent via UPS carbon neutral program which offsets the climate impact of the shipment. the program is verified by Société Générale de Surveillance (SGS), an inspection, testing, and verification company. Additionally, the carbon offset process is certified by The CarbonNeutral Company. UPS's carbon neutral option supports projects that offset the emissions of the shipment's transport. UPS has supported projects that include reforestation, landfill gas destruction, wastewater treatment, and methane destruction. happy habitat incurs this cost, it is not passed down to the consumer.
recycled cotton is created from pre-consumer fibers and clippings that are collected after the cut and sew process. so new pieces that would otherwise be discarded get a second life. our fibers are OKEO-TEX Certified.
environmental benefits to using recycled cotton are:
reduction in incinerator and landfill use, but reprocessing pre-consumer textile waste.
recycled cotton fibers for yarn spinning require no new dyeing, saving water and adding no new pollutants.
the simplified manufacturing process reduces energy and resource use.
recycled cotton requires no land use, intensive water irrigation, and no new fertilizers or pesticides.
certified by OKEO-TEX Certified, and sourced in the usa— texas to be precise.
our alpaca fibers are sourced in the midwest, as close to us in kansas as possible. they are spun and woven in kansas which keeps the travel effects on the environment to a minimum.
